Palmer’s Market traces its origins to 1849 when Levi Palmer moved to Rochester. At that time, the thriving fish hatchery in Lake Ontario employed fishmongers who used horse-drawn wagons to sell “the day’s catch” in the streets.
Dwight Palmer I inherited the business at 24 after his father’s passing. Over the next 40 years, the company built a reputation for providing the finest and freshest seafood to local customers. The company, known as “Palmer Bros,” was led by Dwight’s three sons after his retirement. In 1919, the business expanded and moved its headquarters to 141 State Street. Improved transportation and refrigeration in the 1920s and 1930s allowed the Palmer Brothers to import a variety of seafood from across the U.S. and around the world.
Bud Palmer, the fourth-generation owner, took the helm after returning from WWII. As an innovator and entrepreneur, Bud transformed the business from a primarily retail operation to a predominantly wholesale operation, serving restaurants, schools, businesses, and higher education institutions. Under his leadership, Palmer’s became the largest fresh and frozen seafood distributor in Rochester, NY.
Dwight McGregor “Kip” Palmer became the fifth-generation owner and President of Palmer Food Services, making it the oldest family-owned and operated business in Rochester. By 2002, Palmer Food Services had expanded through acquisitions and organic growth, becoming a full-service broad-line food service distribution company.
In 2009, Palmer’s Direct to You Market opened at the Genesee Valley Regional Market, then adjacent to its distribution center. Built on the company’s rich history and tradition, the market offers an extensive selection of fresh and frozen proteins, groceries, related products, and prepared foods, all with a focus on personal service.
